Pointe Coupee Celebrates Mardi Gras

Starting Sunday with the 38th annual parade in Livonia, along with the 101st Annual New Roads Community Center Carnival Club event and closing with the 79th Annual New Roads Lions Club Mardi Gras Parade, the Fat Tuesday festivities play a big role in our parish’s culture.

Several thousand converged in Livonia on Sunday, while early estimates indicate the 2023 celebration in New Roads may have been the biggest ever. It’s a hectic time for parish entities, including law enforcement, local government, civic organizations and businesses.

Don’t be surprised if it gets busier in the next few years. While other cities – namely New Orleans – reap a huge windfall from the millions of visitors from across the world during the carnival season, the appeal is growing for small-town events. The Mardi Gras festivities in New Roads often mean a shorter drive, more affordable amenities and – most importantly – a much safer environment. Steep fees for parking, along with higher rates for meals and lodging, put the Crescent City outside of the price range for many tourists.

The charm and tradition of our small-city celebration – along with the mostly affordable costs and a more family friendly environment – all play a significant role in drawing carnival enthusiasts to New Roads. Our Mardi Gras tradition boasts a charming and illustrious history, which lends to most of the appeal. With those aspects in mind, it’s likely the interest and appeal of our tradition will continue in the years to come.
